There are moments
Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. The servant girl at the door said to Peter, "You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not." Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.
John 18:15-18 (ESV)
Peter is confused but in the right place to find the answers. He does not resolve this confusion until after he meets with Jesus post-resurrection.
His confusion is understandable. Peter watched Jesus feed 5,000 plus people, heal the sick, walk on water, and more. He was convinced that Jesus is God, yet, why would God allow this tragic crucifixion?
This all makes sense to those looking at it from a distance, but Peter was up close and personal to the situation. I am not sure where all the other disciples were, but Peter was in a place where he might find answers, and that is a great place to start.
We know Peter lied to the girl, yet I have often wondered if he lied, or if he was asking himself who Jesus was. I wonder if he, at the moment, was not convinced that Jesus was God.
There are moments when all of us will be confused. It is critical that we "hang out" where we can find real answers during those times because those who seek God, or truth, will find God/truth.
