Embrace the impossible

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: "Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." But Abram said, "O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" And Abram said, "Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir." And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: "This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir." And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
Genesis 15:1-6

Early and often, we find God reveals Himself through our obedience to Him and in miraculous ways. Yet, we often want to figure it out on our own. We want to consult the many who love consulting the other many, and have many opinions when the Holy One, the one without opinions, is waiting to guide us.

Churches and ministries today often take their signals from the business world. We listen to PR firms and advertising gurus and have spent countless hours in committee meetings trying to figure out the will of God. Yet all the time, His will is available through the time we spend with Him, and His thoughts are always right.

I am sure that Abram was thinking in human terms here. He had to think about his age and Sarai's age and wonder what God was thinking. Yet, God so often sets us up.

We were made to show this world who God is, which happens best when we embrace the impossible and remain obedient to God. Throw too much human logic in the mix, and you get a mixture of iron and clay, which cannot withstand any of the daily pressures of life.
God spoke to Abram. It was said, and His Word would deliver. It is as simple as that.

One day, we answer to God.

It is good that God does not depend upon our ability, faith, or goodness
