Those who know God will never be separated from God.

So he said to them again, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come." So the Jews said, "Will he kill himself, since he says, 'Where I am going, you cannot come'?" He said to them, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins." So they said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been telling you from the beginning.”
John 8:21-25 (ESV)

One day there will be a separation. Those who ignored Jesus will be separated from life, from Him for eternity. Those who embraced Jesus will be with Him for eternity.

The Scriptures are replete with examples. The rich man left his luxurious miserable life and is separated from God for eternity. Lazarus, the beggar, left a miserable purposeful life and is enjoying being with God today. Stephen left this life in what might be considered a tragic way while, in reality, his stoning was the backdrop for his magnificent welcome home. The stone-throwers remain nameless, perhaps for eternity.

We experience a physical life that separates us from what will be and is yet to be determined. However, it is no fool who refuses to allow this life to separate them from the eternal.
This is not something one needs to wonder about. This is something we can know.
John 17:3 (ESV) states: "And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."

Those who know God will never be separated from God. Those who just know about Jesus or have ignored Him have no hope.

One day, we answer to God.

It is good that God does not depend upon our ability, faith, or goodness
