Miserable People

And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, "No more of this!" And he touched his ear and healed him.
Luke 22:49-51 (ESV)

It's hard to imagine what the soldiers thought after Peter chopped off one of their ears and Jesus healed it. It's hard to imagine that they would still go through with the orders to arrest Jesus.

The one who lost and found his ear must have been lost in thought. I would think he had a mix of anger at Peter and wonder at Jesus. Nobody would blame this soldier for being confused.

Yet the Bible does not tell us the soldier's thoughts, but only that this incident happened.

In a way, I am amazed at this soldier arresting Jesus after such a display of love, power, and authority. Yet, today, many reject Jesus amid a preponderance of the evidence of His love, power, and authority.

Those who see God and reject Him must be most miserable in this life and full of "what if" questions in the next. We need to respond to Him when we have the chance.

One day, we answer to God.

It is good that God does not depend upon our ability, faith, or goodness
