And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” Mark 9:35 (ESV)
A servant of all? If we combine this verse with the Sermon on the Mount, we see Jesus going against what is considered normal.
I have never heard anyone say they aspired to be a servant when they grow up. Yet, Jesus indicates that those who are servants "get it" in life, while those who use the servants do not.
Those who understand life understand that life itself cannot gratify their deepest desires. In essence, we were not made to live; we are made to die, and there is no life apart from death. It is the death in life that perpetuates life itself.
Nourishing food was once alive and gave its life so we could be fed. Dead plants and animals enrich the soils with bodies that have no other value now other than to supply nutrients for future generations.
Christ's death gives us spiritual life. There is no life apart from death.
