We might think that God was harsh…

And Joshua said, "Why did you bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today." And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones. And they raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his burning anger. Therefore, to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor.
Joshua 7:25-26 ESVST

We do not seem to understand how tragic it is for people to get into the habit of not listening to God. The world in which we live is brutal, and much of the brutality is wielded from the hand of Satan toward all things precious to God
.
Our only defense and hope for our families, nation, and world is that we listen to God. When we intentionally decide to ignore what God has said, we open ourselves, our families, and our nation up to the worst sort of disasters that are conjured up by the evilest presence in the universe.
We might think that God was harsh here, but a closer look might reveal that He is mercifully trying to keep us from the hands of the evil one.

One day, we answer to God.

It is good that God does not depend upon our ability, faith, or goodness
