And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." So they said to him, "Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said." John 1:19-23 (ESV) When the Apostle John was asked who he was, he proclaimed that he was the one whom Jesus loved. When John the Baptist was asked who he was, he declared that he was a voice of one crying out in the wilderness. It is essential to know who we are and what we are about. Both Johns understood who they were, and the responsibilities that went with their identities. Like the Apostle John, all of us should be amazed by God's love, and, like John the Baptist, be focused on the responsibilities God has given us in our sphere of influence. It's refreshing to talk with someone who knows who they are and lives accordingly. How would you answer the question "Who are you?" |
