Why the test?

After these things, God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here am I." He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you." So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.
Genesis 22:1-4

Did God know what Abraham was going to do? Yes.
Why the test?

Perhaps Abraham did not know what he would do. Perhaps Abraham, after seeing Lot's life destroyed, and passing his wife off as his sister a few times, lacked confidence that he would make the right decision. However, God, who is not tolerant but patient, knew Abraham now had it in him to do what was right, and perhaps He decided to let Abraham see himself as well.
God is gracious and kind and willing to go to great lengths to see us be successful. We need to listen to Him and allow Him to do His perfect work in us. Then we will gain great confidence.

One day, we answer to God.

It is good that God does not depend upon our ability, faith, or goodness
