For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. James 2:10-13 (ESV) We often have our "acceptable sins" and seem to enjoy pointing out the "unacceptable sins" of others. All people are sinners. Nobody thinks what they do is wrong or should be unacceptable to anyone. Any sin we commit is against God, and sin is defined by God, not by committee. Therefore, we are all guilty before God. Those who lie and those who murder have sinned against God. Those who use what they should love and love what they should use are guilty before God. To stand guiltless before God, we need to be covered by the finished work of Christ on the cross. It is Christ's death that justifies us, not our goodness. As we focus on what Christ has done, we begin to loosen sin’s evil grip on our lives and live in a way that honors Him. In essence, we are all the same and will all stand before God as those forgiven or those who refused to accept Christ's payment for their sins. There will be no exceptions. |
