And Moses said to Aaron, "What did this people do to you that you have brought such a great sin upon them?" And Aaron said, "Let not the anger of my lord burn hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. For they said to me, 'Make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.' So I said to them, 'Let any who have gold take it off.' So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf."
Exodus 32:21-24 (ESV)

Aaron played with the truth. Indeed, the people were a handful, yet that is no excuse for ignoring God. The crafting of the golden calf was not quite as he said either. Aaron might have thought he had no choice but to give in to the crowd's demands. We see there and today how easily mobs can change direction and determine the course of human interactions. Mobs should not be determining direction because a majority opinion is never the criterion for truth, and mobs are formed and act following the prevailing emotions of the day.

This passage shows the importance of leadership, standing up to mobs, and embracing the truth. We see the destructive force of the mob, and the fear they can inject into their leaders. We will see Moses act like a leader and clean up the mess that never should have been.

One day, we answer to God.

It is good that God does not depend upon our ability, faith, or goodness
