Every person either gets this right or lives a meaningless life.

And God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. "You shall have no other gods before me.
Exodus 20:1-3 (ESV)

I think the Ten Commandments were given to us because we need to recognize that we will struggle in each area to make healthy decisions. Jesus told us that Christianity was about loving God and loving each other, and the Ten Commandments reflect these two general areas with specific struggles we will encounter.

From the beginning, God tells us that He is the Lord who brought them out of Egypt. He reminds the people that the Godless of that day served many gods who were shown to be powerless when pitted against the only true God. Yet, God knew that man would struggle to wonder if there was more than one God, creator, sustainer, and healer. He knew Satan wanted to be another god and would portray himself as one if we allowed it.

So, from the very beginning of these commandments, we are warned against thinking that anyone or anything could take God's place as God. Some may think it is tolerant to acknowledge that every person could recognize their own God, but it is foolish since there is only one God.

Every person either gets this right or lives a meaningless life given to anxiety, depression, and disappointment.

One day, we answer to God.

It is good that God does not depend upon our ability, faith, or goodness
