Living to satisfy self never satisfies.
Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief,
officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.
How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little
sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon
you like a robber, and want like an armed man.
Proverbs 6:6-11 (ESV)
Man was cursed to work the ground, so work the ground we must. The motivation for
working the ground is the pleasure that comes from working it. We enjoy the fruit of the
garden, the dairy products from the cows, and the warm homes that come from the
fireplaces.
However, in order to enjoy these things, one must hoe the garden, care for the cattle,
and cut, chop, and stack the wood.
Sick, self-absorbed people live life expecting others to work hard on their behalf. They
are constantly thinking about pleasure, and they will use others to gain more of it for
themselves. They are caught up in the moment, and they are surprised by the needs
that arise. Living to satisfy self never satisfies.
