But King David said to Ornan, "No, but I will buy them for the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, nor offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing." 1 Chronicles 21:24 (ESV)
We have not given if it costs us nothing. We are not generous if we ensure our needs are met before helping those in need. Self-absorbed people have perfected the art of honoring themselves by making the giving of gifts about themselves rather than about the recipient. They need to make everything about themselves worthy of their time and effort.
King David shows an understanding of this vital principle and refuses to offer something that costs him nothing, realizing that the word "sacrifice" has implications.
Those in leadership can never escape being an example. David was on display when he disobeyed God, and he is now on display in his approach to the repentance process.
Leaders need to embrace this position, not run from it. |
