Elijah said to him, "Elisha, please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho." But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho. The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?" And he answered, "Yes, I know it; keep quiet."
2 Kings 2:4-5 (ESV)
Elisha was positioning himself to carry on Elijah's work. He had already destroyed all opportunities to return to his former life. Elijah asked him several times to leave, and he would not. Elisha wanted to be with Elijah until the end, and he wanted his blessing. He wanted to continue what Elisha had started.
Many sons of the prophets would have loved to be the heir apparent, yet they talked while Elisha acted. They wondered while Elisha worked. They were scared, while Elisha was confident.
Elijah's successor was evident because of his position, understanding, and commitment.
